2019 Boisseau Viognier

Style

The warm 2019 produced a classically varietal Viognier. The grape’s exuberance was respected resulting inane unabashedly blows Viognier. Aromas of peach, papaya, mango and honeysuckle. This is a rich, viscous, mouth coating and warming wine.

Food Pairings

Root vegetables, rich purees, or lobster.

Vineyard

Boisseau Vineyard, Warren Co. is located on a bluff above Front Royal in the Shenandoah Valley at an elevation of 600 feet. The vineyard is west facing on light, deep, well drained loam soils. The vines were planted in 2000 and are trained on cordon/VSP trellising.

Vintage

2019 was a very strong vintage forViognier especially. Bud break in late April was normal and consistent. A warm, wet May stimulated rapid shoot growth. July started a long hot dry period, which would last until harvest was over. There remained ample moisture in the ground, so vines did not slow their vegetative cycle until early August (right on time for véraison). A hot, dry August accelerated ripening.
An early harvest began on August 26 at Boisseau Vineyard with Viognier. The crop was in excellent shape with good flavors. The only concern was with low acids caused by hot days and warm nights.

Winemaking

Chilled grapes were sorted, pressed, juice settled and then barrel fermented warm (70's F) in old, neutral French oak. No malolactic fermentation. Aged sur lie in barrel for 10 months. Bottled in August of 2020. 560 bottles produced. This wine will improve in the bottle for several years past vintage. Alcohol 14.5%.
