2017 Linden Sauvignon Blanc
Style
This is a classic Linden Sauvignon Blanc with stone dust and grapefruit zest aromas and flavors. Very dry, medium bodied with a bright, persistent acidity. This wine has some aging potential.
Food Pairings
Fresh fish, smoked fish, or richer shellfish very simply prepared, goat cheese, or dishes seasoned with lots of fresh herbs. Oysters on the half shell.
Vineyard
All the grapes are from Hardscrabble which is Linden’s estate vineyard. This is a young vineyard, planted in 2012. The vines are pruned ‘double Guyot’, trained on standard VSP trellising at a density of 1,658 vines per acre. Soils are mostly granite with some greenstone. Slope is gradual and south facing.
Vintage
June and all of July was very dry. Shoot growth was less than normal with very little hedging needed. Young vines and less water retentive soils showed some drought stress. We needed rain, but not the 3.5 inches that fell over a few hours on August 11. The rest of August was uneventful allowing clusters to lose some compactness.
A forecast can sometimes become confused with reality. The beginning of harvest is best remembered by the threats of Harvey, Irma, Maria and Jose. They were no shows, with little affect on quality. However fears of their potential impact did influence picking decisions. Harvest began about ten days early on August 28 with the harvest of a small amount of Semillon. The Sauvignon Blanc was picked on September 4 and 7, 2017.
Winemaking
The grapes were sorted and destemmed before pressing. The Sauvignon Blanc juice was fermented and aged in tank on lees. The Semillon was fermented and aged in old French oak barrels. 79% Sauvignon Blanc and 21% Semillon. Bottled May 2018. 192 cases produced. Drink upon release through 2021. Alcohol is 13.0%
