Bottling

Two years ago we began pruning vines in preparation for the 2023 vintage. This week we’ll complete the vintage with bottling. Pruning is relaxing and slow paced. Bottling is not. There are a lot of moving parts to a bottling line. Bottles are rinsed, filled, corked, and packed at a rate of 1,000 bottles an hour. There is a lot that can go wrong. Even after decades of bottlings, we still worry and have trouble sleeping the night before bottling day.

The best bottling day is a boring day with no problems or interruptions. There is great relief when the last bottle comes off the line. But the big reward won’t come for another year or two, when we release the wines for sale. Our newly bottled wines need time to recover from bottle shock. The journey from barrel to bottle is also stressful for the wines.

After this week, we’ll get back out and prune. The vineyard will be quiet and still. Our stress melts away and the cycle continues.
