Cold is good.

Spring is overanxious this year. Too early by about 10 days. Last week’s warm spell was enjoyable, but concerning as we saw spring explode in the surrounding landscape. This makes winegrowers nervous, as an early bud break increases the chance of frost damage and crop loss. Bud break is defined as the moment when green leaves appear. This is important because at this stage these tender shoots are susceptible to frost damage (temperatures below 29F). If it gets that cold, the shoots will freeze and die. As will the tiny nascent clusters that they support.

Here at Linden the average bud break for Chardonnay is April 20th. That is exactly one month away, but already we are seeing buds swell, a sign that the vines are in the ready position. At the bud swell stage, the vines can handle very cold temperatures without problems. This is why we like it cold right now. Cold temperatures slow down bud development and delay bud break. Chances are that bud break will still be early this year, but the delay is welcome.
