Start of Veraison

A few berries on our Cabernet Sauvignon cluster have turned color. This transition is called veraison. This year it is early. All indications point to an early harvest.

This is also the stage where weather begins to have a more of a direct influence on the style and quality of the vintage. In the case of Cabernet Sauvignon, the next 60 days will be defining. We could use a couple of moderate refreshing rains, but not too much (a gentle inch or two would be perfect). Young vines are water stressed. The soil is extremely dry. Just the right amount of rain will keep the vines functioning properly. Too much rain could stimulate green growth and swell berries.

So far, the growing season of 2024 is similar to that of 2023. Except this year is drier, earlier, and hotter.
