Early Harvest?
Looks like harvest will be perhaps a week early this year. We are already seeing (and tasting) veraison in some varieties. Veraison is when the berries turn color and start to make sugar and flavor. Next week we’ll monitor Cabernet Sauvignon. It is our best indicator grape as there is a diversity of plantings representing different vine ages, clones, soil types and slope aspects. When 50% of the grapes turn color in each block, the date is recorded and in turn compared to previous years. This helps us predict harvest dates as it is our only visual indicator of ripening.
This past week we have received three evening rains, but only of about 0.2 tenth of an inch each. The hope is that young vines might benefit a bit. So far both June and July have received less than an inch of rain each. The average for these months is more than three inches each.
