The Lanternfly has arrived at Hardscrabble Vineyard
While working the vines we discovered these Spotted Lanternfly nymphs. The nymphs don’t do any damage to the vines. But the adults will suck sap from the succulent vine shoots. We expect to see them later this summer.
A few Lanternflies on a vine is not of any concern, but like invasive insect species of the past, without any native predators, their numbers can reach Biblical portions. That is a lot of sucking. Without any control they could suck the vines dry and kill them. Unfortunately the ultimate control would be spaying an insecticide, which is unappealing on so many levels.
Our colleagues in Pennsylvania have been dealing with the Lanternfly since 2014. Because of their experience and research, we are in a better position to handle and control the onslaught. Our hope is that this year will only be a “dress rehearsal” for the big invasion next year.
