Smoke in the Vineyard
This morning was apparently sunny, but we only saw gray haze. Our eyes were irritated and our brains felt scrambled. When you work outside day after day there is a expectation and adaptation of the environment that surrounds and envelopes you. Today was eerie and a bit scary. I couldn’t stop thinking about climate change. And the future.
The vines and the grapes are fine. Maybe a bit less photosynthesis activity during the critical flowering stage, but I don’t anticipate any significant impact. It is too early in the season for “smoke taint” contamination If this hazy smoke was to descend in September we would be worried that it could affect wine aromas and flavors.
