Hardscrabble Journal

Patience Rewards

Patience rewards, but the wait has been agonizing. The Dorian threat didn’t help, but it looks like we are all clear. Our big push starts tomorrow at Avenius Vineyard to continue at Hardscrabble. We will start a cycle of picking one day and then sorting and pressing the next. Possibly for the next ten days straight. By the end of next week most of the white grapes will be fermenting juice.

The grapes are at just the right ripeness level. Flavors are ideal. Acids a bit low, reflecting the warmer temperatures over the past week. Temperatures fall tomorrow, helping retain freshness in the grapes and therefore in the wines. Grapes will remain cool during picking and transporting to the walk-in chiller at the winery.

All indicators are favorable for some very successful white wines for vintage 2019. The reds are looking good, but still need several weeks more ripening time before they come into our focus.
