Hardscrabble Journal

Inspiration

Yesterday was a dismally grey, rainy day. No pruning, no energy, no enthusiasm. We decided that Riesling would brighten our spirits.

Dégustation is the French word for tasting. It is our tradition at Linden to occasionally hold impromptu, informal dégustations after work, often with a theme, usually blind. Yesterday’s dégustation was Riesling. We went deep into our cellars. The results gladdened the heart and expanded our horizons.

Any good Riesling will generate a smile. But these were great Rieslings that also challenged us intellectually. All were aged over a decade. They were from great producers such as Weinbach, Zind-Humbrecht, Pichler, and Muller-Catoir.

Afterwards we felt energized and inspired.

Any craftsman or artist benefits from outside inspiration. Chefs dine out. Artists frequent museums. Architects travel. Winemakers can stay home and accomplish the same thing. A great advantage right now.
