Hardscrabble Journal

Ramps

Ramps are up. Foragers are scurrying up and down hidden back country forested hills with large plastic bags. Troves of these wild leeks are close kept secrets.

Last night I ate my first ramps of the season. We will eat them again for lunch. Tender, sweet, and delicate, they are like no other green I have tasted. Soon they will be gone. Season over. I do not know of anyone cultivating ramps. I hope not, as it is one of the few foods remaining that have a season. That makes them taste even better.
