Hardscrabble Journal

Clear Sailing

Sally was a welcome no show. The cool weather ahead will allow use to relax the harvest pace. Each passing dry, sunny day gives a bit more concentration to the grapes. Unfortunately for the past few days the sunlight has been filtered by smoke haze coming from the West Coast fires.

Yesterday we pressed Avenius Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The flavors and balance were spot on. The wines should be elegant and poised. Ballerina wines.

Now we are in the thick of Hardscrabble Chardonnay. Today we pick a younger planting that has been showing great potential. It is now five years old and in full production. The site is a ridge that faces east and falls off on three sides just below the winery. It is planted to an old Wente clone (72) that has small, loose clusters and has resisted any rot issues.

Next week picking will continue up the ridge as the older vine Chardonnays ripen. Right now it looks like smooth sailing all next week. A welcome break.
