Hardscrabble Journal

The Courage to Do Nothing

Cool weather has slowed ripening. We are waiting for Merlot tannins to relax a bit more as their skins remain a bit tough and astringently drying.

Waiting is difficult. We lose rhythm. Rest is good, but then adrenalin energy has to be reconstituted. Shorter days, lower sun, brisk mornings are usually markers for the end, not the middle.

It is tempting to continue to pick. The grapes look ready. We are ready. The weather is fine. Right now it is stressful to do nothing. But we have faith that there will be satisfaction with our decision when the wines are tasted this winter.

Delayed satisfaction.
