What Happens Next?

Yesterday was a bummer. There is no way to sugarcoat a big rain during harvest. We spent the day crushing and pressing grapes harvested earlier in the week. We did pick some very nice Chardonnay along with a tremendous quantity of red grapes that will be the foundation for Rosé. While pleased at the quality of this juice, anxiety over the waves of rain falling around us dampened our spirits. We are only half way through harvest and unsure of how the grapes remaining on the vines will fare.

Our glimmer of hope is the forecast, which is perfect for drying out the vineyards and continued ripening. The big question on our minds concerns the grape skins. Were they able to resist cracking and deterioration from all the water? If they remain healthy, ripening can proceed and they will recover. If not, we will be faced with some tough decisions.

Later today the sun will come out, and we will walk the vineyards. There will be great trepidation walking those first rows and evaluating the condition of the clusters. The rest of harvest will be determined on what we see.
