One Day

If it is possible to hear vines grow, this would be the time. The heat of the past several days has spurred an explosion of green. Shoot tips are elongating at a rate that could be measured in inches per day. Tendrils are reaching for a wire to attach to. They need some human hands to guide them in the right direction. But our hands are still occupied with shoot thinning.

We still haven’t finished shoot thinning. In a week’s time the growth will be too dense to do this job efficiently. By later next week we won’t be able to see what we are doing and the shoots won’t pull off easily. Pruners will be required which doubles the amount of time needed to get the same job done.

Farmers have a saying: “The difference between a good farmer and a poor farmer is one day. The good farmer is one day ahead and the poor farmer is one day behind.” Right now we don’t have the time to determine which category we are in.
