Harvest Outlook Improving

We’ve finally caught some breaks in the weather. The soils are the driest they have been this year due to a combination of missed thunderstorms and warm, sunny days. Now the question is how long will our luck last?

The first lab analysis on grape samples was run earlier this week. The reason for doing this is that numbers such as sugar (brix), TA (titratable acidity), and pH can be compared to past vintages. We now have a confirmation that harvest will be on the late side. We may start with a few small picks at the Boisseau Vineyard around September 8, but it now looks like the big action will begin with Sauvignon Blanc the week of September 12.

These dates are always subject to change. Dry, hot, sunny conditions accelerate ripening. Cool, cloudy, and wet slows things down. It is still way too early to make any vintage declarations. The weather becomes increasingly important the closer we get to harvest.

Cross fingers, bite nails, and check the weather forecast. Then repeat.
