April is a transitional month in the vineyard. Pruning has been completed. Vine canes are tied down to the trellis wires. Grass and cover crops are greening up, but not yet ready for the mower. Spring is early, as it often is now. Perhaps it is time to recalculate what “average” means.

Remember Climate Change?

It hasn’t gone away. Nor have our plans for our experimental climate change variety trial vineyard. We will start to plant it this week. Last year we researched candidates looking for specific characteristic such as rot resistance and late ripening. Some vines were grafted here on-site, and additional vines were sourced from nurseries throughout the country. For a detailed list of the varieties and the reasons why they were chosen, you can link to the Hardscrabble Journal.

Coming soon: Weekly “Raid The Cellar” Offers

I’ve been writing more often, as it is the only way we have to communicate with the outside world. I promise, once this passes, you won’t see Linden Updates delivered your “in” box as often.

Over the last several weeks we’ve found ourselves being less hesitant about opening those special bottles of wine. Every day now seems special. Or at least the day merits some sort of reward. Hence, beginning next weekend, we will begin offering special wine selections called “Raid the Cellar.” These will be pre-releases, vintage verticals, and even some library wines. All, of course sent to your home via UPS.

In the meantime, we will continue to offer to send wines and waive all shipping charges.

Linden Direct

Linden now ships wine via UPS to the District of Columbia in addition to Virginia. We are offering free shipping and handling during our closure.

We shamelessly remain stubborn Luddites, so you’ll have to call in your order the old-fashioned way 540-364-1997. Shari is pruning her vines in the morning, but in the office by the phone in the afternoons. Otherwise leave a message.
