Eichberg Riesling
Alsace | Emile Beyer | Grand Cru | 2014
This wine astounded us with its lightweight power, density, acid quality, and length. This is the wine we aspire to make, but we’re realistic enough to know that Linden’s Riesling will probably never attain this level of finessed concentration.
However, inspiration doesn’t have to be contained by grape variety. In many ways the Avenius and Hardscrabble Chardonnays can emulate this Riesling’s attributes. As our Chardonnay vines are getting older (now 26 to 37 years old) we need to take advantage of this kind of subtle intensity that can only come from older vines. Its purity reinforced our decision to pull back on the amount of new oak we’ve been using and let the vineyard speak.
