Hardscrabble Journal
Out of Order
We wait. We wait for the new vine shoots to lengthen to at least four inches. Then we can start to shoot thin. This will be our first task of the growing season.
But this cool spring has slowed everything to a crawl. The Chardonnay, which is always first to grow, is not at four inches. The Cabernet, which is last to grow and always at least ten days later than Chardonnay, is starting to grow and will soon be at four inches. Our fear is that every variety will cry for attention at the same time. Once the warmth comes. Which will be soon.
So we wait. We do odd jobs. We organize the barn. We make dump runs. We cut a bit more firewood. And we know that probably next week all hell will break loose. And that will be a good thing.
