Hardscrabble Journal

May Freeze?

Now I’m worried. This does not look good. At sunrise this Saturday morning the temperature could drop below 30°F here on the mountain. That would be devastating. Just one or two degrees could make a big difference.

All our vines now have tender, freeze-susceptible shoots out. They, along with the crop they carry, will be killed at around 29°F. That is the temperature forecast for Saturday morning.

Normally Hardscrabble and Avenius sites escape classic frosts when the air is still and the dew point is reached. But this is a massive air blast that churns up the air and there is no settling and no air inversions. And no sleep for us.
