Hardscrabble Journal
One Degree
Obsession is checking multiple weather sources every few hours, getting the same outcome, and knowing that it won’t change a thing anyway. One degree could be the difference between a full harvest and a fraction of a harvest.
The last time we had significant crop loss was in 1998 when an intense hail storm took out 80% of our crop in 5 minutes. The difference is that we had no idea it was coming until it happened. No anticipation stress.
This freeze is different. We’ve known about its potential for several days. We know that it will be borderline, right on the edge of no damage to complete loss. And we know that just one degree could make or break.
No sweet dreams tonight.
