Hardscrabble Journal
Smoke on the Water
At sunrise this morning the pond was smoking. Autumn’s first chill and summer-warmed water combined to produce a fine wispy steam.
This is a signal that a good harvest is coming. Our best wines come from grapes that ripen under cool conditions. This is especially true with whites. Chilly nights retain the acidity, aromas, and flavors that define wines of distinction. Warm, muggy days and nights can only give us serviceable wines.
We will take full advantage of this gift of high pressure. With renewed confidence we walk the vines and taste the grapes. Soon harvest will begin.
