Veraison: The Beginning of Ripening

This week we saw the first berries turn color. This signals the beginning of ripening. The vines are going into the ripening stage in great shape. The canopy (shoots and leaves) is healthy and balanced, clusters are loose and well distributed in the open fruit zone, and berries are small, promising good concentration.

The stage is set for a great vintage. The weather really starts to count now. Our work is done. The quality and style of the vintage will be determined by Mother Nature. What we want from her is normal, average, and typical weather. No extremes. Winegrowers don’t like surprises.
