Frost Free

Not that cold last night, only in the high 30’s. We are feeling good and ready to start the season on a good footing. This week the threat of frost damage brought our vineyard activities to a halt. Now we are regrouping and seeing the vineyard in a different light with optimism rather than fear.

Next week we will start to shoot thin. We methodically remove unwanted shoots on each vine. This is a highly skilled job, akin to pruning. Every vine is thinned, usually twice each spring. It’s all done by hand, it is satisfying work, and we love it. Beautiful May warm weather conditions make it all the more enjoyable.

This year it will be especially rewarding knowing that we will decide which shoots stay and which shoots go. As opposed to the frost deciding.
